SAP License Optimisation - Market Guide

Our latest Market Guide for SAP License Optimisation looks at tools and services available to manage licenses for SAP systems including ERP & eCommerce platforms. SAP continues to be the publisher of choice for large enterprises looking for software in this space, despite the considerable cost and administration overhead of running their software. SAP licensing is amongst the most complex and risky of all major vendors, scoring very highly on any licensing risk assessment in terms of:

  • Complexity
  • Custom agreements
  • Vague terms
  • Cost
  • Frequency of Audit
  • Size of audit settlement

For these reasons SAP users must pay close attention to their SAP Licensing. SAP recognise this themselves and mandate that users submit regular license consumption reports – known as SAP LAW reports. And rather like Judge Dredd, SAP are the LAW – and resort to it frequently to defend their copyright and breaches of their license agreements.

The Solution

Fortunately, help is at hand, and SAP’s own usage reporting can be used to ensure spend is optimised and risk minimised. There are tools and services available from a number of providers that can ingest SAP usage reports and provide insight into the best license allocation approach. Some automate the process of license reassignment. The ITAM Review have published a standard for assessing an SAP License Management Tool, available here. We also provide SAP Licensing training via our LISA service – more details here.
