12 days of ITAM: Day 7 – ISO/IEC 19770-1 certification

On the 7 day of our “12 days of ITAM,” the ITAM community is bringing you the world’s first, globally- recognised and accepted ISO/IEC 19770-1 certification scheme! The following was submitted by Jennifer Carr. Marketing & Membership Director at the ITAM Forum.

Although ISO creates standards, it doesn’t certify organisations or implement standards – industries need to do this themselves. At the moment, there is no independent, global way to indisputably demonstrate how good an organisation’s ITAM practice is. We’re working to fix this.

The ITAM Forum Committee of Experts – more than 100 ITAM professionals from 20 countries and 30+ industries – has been working to create an ISO/IEC 19770-1 certification scheme, which has now been drafted and is going through a validation phase.

-1 is a Management System Standard based on the Deming Cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act or PDCA) of continuous improvement. So ISO/IEC 19770-1 certification is a management system certification scheme.

Certification will give organisations an unbiased, independent and globally-accepted quality stamp for their ITAM practice. This will ensure them and their internal and external stakeholders that they meet the highest ITAM standards and that they treat the management of IT assets very seriously.

Certification will also help ITAM professionals speak to their expertise and the business value they create, which will uplift their role and responsibilities and help mature ITAM into a more trusted, respected and valued business partner.

Overall, a globally-accepted certification scheme will gain ITAM more attention and investment.

We’re working to make ITAM the de facto business practice it deserves to be and a board room priority. A globally accepted certification scheme will help make this happen.
