For day 9 of the “12 days of ITAM” we spoke with Kevin Miller, Director of Product Marketing at Flexera about the evolving nature of ITAM as we look back on 2022, and the trends we can expect to see in 2023.

According to the annual Flexera State of ITAM Report, one of the more encouraging trends we have seen is the increasingly prominent role that the ITAM team is assuming in many organizations. Last year 22% of the global respondents indicated their organization’s ITAM team reported directly to the CIO or CTO.  This year that number almost doubled to 43%. With the increased visibility that this placement within the reporting structure creates, it empowers these teams to have a louder voice within their organization, providing them more momentum to garner funding and support for their initiatives.

This year’s report also indicates another encouraging trend with regard to ITAM participation within organizations—as more and more organizations continue their push to the cloud, we are seeing an increase in the use of a Cloud Center of Excellence (CCOE).  This group coordinates and communicates an organization’s cloud strategy, as well as espouses best practices around the use of cloud.  The data from this year’s report shows that for organizations with a CCOE (which was 69% of the organizations polled in the survey), 83% of those CCOE teams had a member from the ITAM team.  As the CCOE is the focal point for the evangelization of the use of cloud within the organization, having an ITAM team member included in that group and participating in cloud strategy planning will reap benefits for the organization.  As such, ITAM-related activities (software licensing entitlements and compliance, in particular) will be included in the CCOE discussions, which can enable cost savings as well as mitigating risk from security and/or licensing issues.

We are hopeful and optimistic that these trends will continue as they help to empower the ITAM practice and its practitioners.
